  • VLC 3.0.12 is now out! Native support for VLC on Apple Silicon means that the player can now plug into the M1’s graphics processing unit to access accelerated decoding capabilities. This means that your high-resolution 4K and 8K videos should now play flawlessly, while other features like 10-bit HDR should also work without any issues.
  • @stardomains My understanding is that Apple Silicon Macs can now run iOS Apps natively. So it is possible for VLC-iOS to be made available for Apple Silicon, obviously not the same feature set as the macOS Intel version.
  • I've successfully ripped/played 4k bluray disks with Makemkv and vlc with my intel mac (2015 macbook pro). I'm currently using M1 Mac mini, and Makemkv is working seemlessly with any 4k bluray disk that I have. But the problem is playing them with VLC (apple silicon version).

Jan 19, 2021 VLC 3.0.12 is now out! Support for Apple Silicon (Mac M1) and Big Sur, improvements for DASH, RIST, Bluray support, fixes for macOS audio, Windows GPU, crashes and security issues. According to the release notes for version 3.0.12, the new update adds native support for Apple Silicon. Other listed improvements include. Rows per page: 25. Fully compatible with Apple silicon (M1) 🚫 Not working. ⚠️ Initial support or Beta with issues/crashes reported.

Devices and Mac OS X version

VLC media player requires Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later. It runs on any Mac with a 64-bit Intel processor or an Apple Silicon chip. Previous devices are supported by older releases.
Note that the first generation of Intel-based Macs equipped with Core Solo or Core Duo processors is no longer supported. Please use version 2.0.10 linked below.

Web browser plugin for Mac OS X

Support for NPAPI plugins was removed from all modern web browsers, so VLC's plugin is no longer maintained. The last version is 3.0.4 and can be found here. It will not receive any further updates.

We provide older releases for users who wish to deploy our software on legacy releases of Mac OS X. You can find recommendations for the respective operating system version below. Note that support ended for all releases listed below and hence they won't receive any further updates.
